DAY 90 - Pinata

TITLE: Mouse Pinata
ASSIGNMENT: Make a pinata and destroy it.

MATERIALS: White printer paper, push pins, clear tape, gum candy from the Daiso store.


INSPIRATION: The display of what a pinata contains; the meaning of it all.  The paper, the poking, the candy.  Did you REALLY think I was going to make an ACTUAL pinata? ;)

DAY 89 - Packing Materials

TITLE: PACKING PEEPS
ASSIGNMENT: Work only with bubble wrap or any other packing materials you have on hand.

MATERIALS: Packing peanuts, sharpies, folded piece of white paper.

INSPIRATION: Those packages of yellow peeps made of pure sugar that you see every Easter, that could and will survive nuclear war?  Well this is a twist, packing peeps, only they are pissed since they don't have a holiday, only the task of cushioning the shipped goods that people send.

DAY 88 - Workplace

TITLE: Robot Homicide

ASSIGNMENT: Make something using only stuff from your workplace or office.  If you don't work, use items that are usually found in an office.

MATERIALS: Erasers, pencils, push pins.

INSPIRATION: The robot was the easy part, until it began to fall apart as I pushed the pencils into the erasers numerous times, then, piece began to fall off.  Hmmm, what do I do now?  Why turn it into a crime scene of course!

DAY 87 - Candle

TITLE: Monk Beheading the Blood Beast

ASSIGNMENT: What can you do with a candle?  Try using the drips from a lit candle to make an image, or use an unlit one to draw on a porous surface, then make the image appear with watercolor or ink.  Or, as always, feel free to experiment.

MATERIALS: White candle lit, paper, black pen, red sharpie.

INSPIRATION: I wanted to make the beast come off the page with the wax, so lots of candle build up. Then coloring its face red and the final touch, the sideways lighting making he dried wax droplets seem like tiny rocks.

DAY 86 - Cake, Pie Or Cookie

TITLE: Pie Sunrise

ASSIGNMENT: Decorate a cake, pie or cookie.  Store-bought or homemade frosting can be used, but sprinkles, powdered sugar, and other toppings are fun to work with as well. Document it being eaten.

MATERIALS: Safeway tiny, personal Baked Apple Pie, white tube frosting, food coloring set, paint brush, Photoshop for the sun burst.

INSPIRATION: Paint on a baked good?  What?  I have never tried to paint, okay so the instructions do say, "decorate" not "paint', but who said I do things the easy way? ;)  So, I took a shot at painting a sunrise field of yellow flowers.  Was it easy? Heck no!  Do I like it? Ended up looking more like a pizza, but I thought the idea would be fun.  Either way, once I scraped off the coloring, it tasted pretty good inside!

DAY 85 - Work With Words

TITLE: Discover

ASSIGNMENT: Make an image with just words or letters.  You can cut them from magazine, draw them yourself, or print out words on a computer to work with.

MATERIALS: Sunday paper advertisements.

INSPIRATION: Paging through the ads I couldn't help but laugh at some of the words used to "sell" the food and other items.  So, I decided let's select some words for the male and some for the female, and then if I am lucky see if we can create a sort of visual storyline from the picture and the words both, together.  I think it turned out pretty good!

DAY 84 - Keep It Clean

TITLE: Soap Scum

ASSIGNMENT: Use a bar of soap to make something new.  You can carve it with a knife, use it to draw, break it into pieces, or even make bubbles-just have fun.

MATERIALS: Jergens bar of soap, knife.

INSPIRATION: My biggest fear was that it would be "pieces" before I finished it!  I decided to carve the bar of soap.  At first I wanted to carve a toilet, you know "toilet soap"? Yeah, well as soon as I realized just how hard it is to carve in soap, it made carving in butter look positively easy!  I cut out a face and made an ugly bad guy, I call him "Soap Scum!"

DAY 82 - Created Utensil

TITLE: Environmentolapitator

ASSIGNMENT:Create a new kind of utensil.  Functional or not, document its use.

MATERIALS: cardboard, glue, red and black felt pens, scissors.

INSPIRATION: What sort of device would I need to make readings of the atmosphere and weather?  Well something portable and handheld, that could be used for hundreds of miles.  I bring you, the ENVIRONMENTOLAPITAOR!  Say that ten times fast!

DAY 81 - Erasers

TITLE: Erase Me-Yow!

ASSIGNMENT: Make something out of erasers.  Kneaded erasers are great to mold, standard pink erasers can be easily carved, and straight pins can be used to attach them to each other.

MATERIALS: Eraser, knife, black ink pen.


INSPIRATION: I had to move the eraser in different directions to see which I could carve something from.  If you have never tried to carve an eraser, it is not easy!  So, I went with the obvious inspiration, a cat!

DAY 80 - Tye Dyeing

TITLE: Tye Dye Shirt

ASSIGNMENT:Work with food or fabric dye.  You can try
traditional tie-dye methods or just paint it on. Experiment
with unconventional materials.








MATERIALS: Sculpy, acrylic paints.
 
INSPIRATION: I didn't have any dyes around the house, not
even food coloring! So, I had to think outside the box, what could I make that uses tye-dye methods? Why not create the shirt that has been dyed!

DAY 79 - Alley Art

TITLE: Alley Art In Motion

ASSIGNMENT:Walk through an alley or along a small road and pick up discarded materials to work with.  Don't be afraid of a little dirt, just be careful not to cut yourself.

MATERIALS: Air Freshner, plastic grip, broken cell phone case (pink), branch, string, wire.

INSPIRATION: I would say the entire thing is inspiration!  Not sure WHAT it is, but it IS!

DAY 78 - Story Of A Stranger

TITLE: Travis Wentmore

ASSIGNMENT: Make up a name and write a back story for a stranger you see today.

MATERIALS: Random web photo and Word(s).

INSPIRATION: None to speak of. Just grabbed a picture off the internet and add a back story.

TRAVIS WENTMORE
 
Born in Corinth, Mississippi in 1994, Travis lived with his Father after his parents’ divorce in 2001.  He had a hard time in school and moved several times due to his Father looking for carpentry work  He saw his Mother only one other time when he went with his Father to visit her in in prison at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.  She had been arrested for drug-related charges that had continued until she no longer knew who she was selling it to and who she was getting it from.  Travis spoke maybe three sentences while she cried and apologized for 20 minutes, telling him she would try harder.  His Father never took him back and he has not seen her in 4 years.  His Father gave him the choice to stay with him and possibly risk moving again, or go live with his Aunt Lisa in Seattle, WA.  Travis chose to move to Seattle after some debate.  He is on the bus and on his way and took this shot to send to his Father.

DAY 77 - Shredded Paper

TITLE: Paper Basket and Flower

ASSIGNMENT: Work with shredded paper. Use an actual paper shredder or simply cut paper into thin strips.


MATERIALS: 3 colored sheets of paper, 1 page catalog page, scissors, tape, staples.


INSPIRATION: What can I make with strips of paper?  Well weaving is the first thing that came to mind, and the whole time I was wishing I knew a 1st grader who could do that part for me much faster.  Then once I figured it out, I made the flower last and added he handle, and TA DA! Paper Basket and Flower.  Now the first person that says "Hey, nice purse" I'm gonna deck em!

DAY 75 - Chalk Drawing

TITLE: Chalk Sunset
ASSIGNMENT: Get some chalk and work on the sidewalk near your home.
MATERIALS: Sidewalk chalk of course!
INSPIRATION: Ok, here is a medium I have never tried before, and boy is it obvious!  This is a sunset, now in watercolor, I could rock this, with chalk?  Not so well, it was different.

DAY 74 - Be Bold

TITLE: NicroCat Gum
ASSIGNMENT: Go to a shop and ask what they'll let you make there.
MATERIALS: Free cat food sample, bubble wrap package from magnets, superglue and Photo shop.
INSPIRATION: Like I was going to walk into some store and say "Hey, I create things out of odd things and make a new art thing.  Can I create something in your store?  Besides, it'll will surely bring you business, right?"  Yeah...right.  So, I used this cat food sample packet and made something I found funny. :)

DAY 73 - Rocks

TITLE: Rocks From Another Galaxy
ASSIGNMENT: Work with gravel, sand or rocks near your home.
MATERIALS: Cement rock pieces, acrylic paint, Photo shop.
INSPIRATION: What color would rocks be from another planet?  From the moon, white (touched one at Canaveral!) or maybe rustic red from Mars?  Or, maybe a blue terrains planet?  So, blue rocks it is!

TITLE: Shoe Man
ASSIGNMENT: Use all of your shoes in your household to make something, or work on a single pair of shoes that were destined for the thrift store.
MATERIALS: Shoes, red crepe paper, 3-D glasses, black hat, pair of socks.
INSPIRATION: What in the hell can you make from a pair of shoes???!??!?!?!  Well, after a mere 60 seconds, Shoe Man was born!

DAY 71 - Time-Travel

TITLE: EvaporGun
ASSIGNMENT: Make something that seems like it came from another era in history.
MATERIALS: Lighter, Pen caps, screw rivets (plastic), camera strap (unused), zipper handle, L wrench, camera protector, super glue.
INSPIRATION: I needed to make something way super cool from the future, right?  I mean I could have easily gone outside and found a rock and called it a hunting tool from caveman times, right?

TITLE: Number Warrior
ASSIGNMENT: Work only with numbers today.  You should make an image using numbers, make something into number shapes, do something involving a calculator...
MATERIALS: Paper, pen, photoshop (for colors).
INSPIRATION: Wanted to create a sort of headdress for a warrior or island king of some kind.

TITLE: A Foot Away
ASSIGNMENT: Create something with paper mache.
MATERIALS: Newspaper, flour, water, acrylic paint, superglue, Easter ribbon.
INSPIRATION: What would it look like if you were walking through a grassy field in ToonTown and looked down and saw a bloody, foot still inside of a shoe, what would it look like?  I suspect, something like this. ;)

INSPIRATION: It is hard to be inspired at the grocery store really.  I mean most of your time you are fighting to get your stuff and just get out.  So, with a little bit of awareness (okay a lot) I did this.

ASSIGNMENT: Make something with your dinner before you eat it.
MATERIALS: Toasted Cheese slices, crackers.
INSPIRATION: Well if you are going to have a bowl of chicken noodle soup, you should at least create something that is going to eat it!

TITLE: Mr. Spring In A Box!
ASSIGNMENT: Use only things you find around the bathroom to create something.  Extra credit:  Make it in the bathroom!
MATERIALS: Cold medicine cup, small shampoo bottle. trimmers, empty Irish Spring box.
INSPIRATION: How does one get inspired in the bathroom exactly?  Well I just looked not at what I could make, but more at shapes of things and what they could represent.  Thus a man in a soap box wearing a hat!

DAY 59 - Mix and Match

TITLE: Cork Dress
ASSIGNMENT: Work with two materials that generally don't go together, like markers and bananas or leaves and binder clips.
MATERIALS: Coffee filter (small) and wine corks.
INSPIRATION: Grabbed the two items because I marveled at how opposite they both were to each other, than made the dress and glued on the wine corks, and a dress!

TITLE: Tiny Little Man
ASSIGNMENT: Make something as big as possibly can.  If it's something representation, see if you can make it life-sized (a giant crdboard elephant, a drawing of a person your height, a cloth car you could fit in.)

INSPIRATION: Don't know why I thought "Land of the Giants" on this one, but I did.

DAY 55 - Advertising Jingle

TITLE: Cherry Blossom
ASSIGNMENT: Write and advertising jingle for something in nature (a tree, a bird, a cloud) Bonus: Make a commercial to go with it!
MATERIALS: Cherry Blossom picture, Photoshop.
INSPIRATION: Tis' the season for Cherry Blossoms, so I chose them for my jingle.  I also wrote mine very contemporary and ends with a spoken addition very quickly.

DAY 54 - Connect The Dots

TITLE: Gypsy Man
ASSIGNMENT: Make something only using dots.  The dots could be stippling from a pen, the circles cut from paper using a hole punch, or even small, round price stickers.
MATERIALS: Ink pen, plain paper.
INSPIRATION: I used to love using points in drawing for years, so this one wasn't a hard choice. I love the effect and control and it also makes you take your time, whether you want to or not.

TITLE: Smell of the Lion
ASSIGNMENT: Make something in which the sense of smell is the essential component.

INSPIRATION: Hmmm sense of smell?  Maybe a candle and a specially made candle holder which features a nose of a feline of the wild; a lion? Sure. sounds good.

DAY 52 - Upside Down

TITLE: Old Woman
ASSIGNMENT: Work upside down.  Create something in such a way that you have to rotate it 180 degrees to display/see it when it is finished.
MATERIALS: Plain paper and pencil.
INSPIRATION: Saw her image on the web, wrinkles and attitude, had to draw it.  What is weird, is you have to stop and think HOW to draw things upside down.

TITLE: Fire In The Forest of the White.
ASSIGNMENT:  Work only with white materials today.  Try working white on white for a real challenge.
MATERIALS: White printing paper.
INSPIRATION: Trees, forest fires, white.
